HIPS filament is a strong and slightly flexible filament that is suitable for many markets. The material HIPS (High-Impact Polystyrene) is soluble in limonene and is widely used as a support material in addition to ABS. Both plastics have the same printing temperature. HIPS is very similar to ABS, but as the name implies, it is able to withstand much higher impact forces. It is easy to paint, workable and easy to glue. Additionally, it is food safe and declared FDA compliant for food processing applications. Please note that HIPS filament, just like ABS filament, has the annoying property that a strong odor (styrene) is released during printing. A well-ventilated space is recommended during 3D printing with HIPS filament.

Tip for printing with HIPS filament: keep the speed of your print fan low so that details are preserved and the strength is good! If you use HIPS as a support material, it may be better to turn the fan a little higher (around 40%) to ensure that it does not adhere too well to the surface. It is good to know that eSun HIPS filament is not hygroscopic and therefore does not absorb moisture.
